Obituary of James P. Kavney, Jr.
James P. Kavney, Jr., 84, son of the late James and Madeline Kavney, peacefully passed away at home on August 19, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara (Newell) Kavney, and their five children: Kristine (Jeffrey) Kendall of Odenton, MD, Michael (Kim) of Marietta, GA, Steven (Mary) of Moorestown, NJ, Kathleen Fleming of Utica, NY, and Matthew of Annapolis, MD. He was blessed with eleven grandchildren: Katie (Alex) Banks & Patrick Kendall, Matt & Peter Kavney, Elena & Nicholas Kavney, Maura (Devin) Hurley & Eileen (Luke) Curtis, and George, James & Maddie Kavney. He is also survived by his brother, Gary (Judy), and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Brian (Mary).
Jim was a 1957 graduate of Marcellus Central Schools in Marcellus, NY, where he met his wife Barbara and raised their growing family over his first 50 years. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps shortly after graduation and then attended Morrisville College, where he participated on both their basketball and football teams.
Professionally, Jim spent his entire career of 43 years with Honeywell (formerly Allied Chemical and Allied Signal). He began at their facility in Solvay, NY in 1959, holding several roles over his first few decades. In the late 1980s, upon the closure of their Solvay plant, he was transferred to Baltimore, MD to oversee their operation at the Inner Harbor. In this role, Jim was responsible for managing the dismantlement and remediation of the site, as well as directing community relations with applicable city, state, and federal agencies. This project lasted the next decade before he retired to Naples, FL.
Jim was an avid golfer and he and Barbara enjoyed 20 years in Naples relishing the sunshine and hosting their family and friends. As a founding resident and member of Vanderbilt Golf & Country Club, Jim was very active within the community and their local parish, St. Agnes Church. Jim served as a Head Usher for several years, as well as accomplishing the status of Knight of the 4th Degree with the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus.
Jim's legacy will be one based on and defined by hard work, commitment, loyalty, and reliability. These values will always be cherished by his loved ones.
Calling hours will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, One West Main Street, Marcellus, on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11 a.m. There will be a private burial.
