Obituary of Michael S. Hammerschmidt

Michael S. Hammerschmidt, 53, of Marcellus, NY passed away on January 9, 2023. He was born in Evansville, Indiana and grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas. Mike attended both Kansas State University and the University of Kansas, but always considered himself a Jayhawk. He completed his Bachelor's degree at Empire State College and spent his career in the financial industry, most recently with Prudential Advisors.

Mike loved refereeing basketball games, and being behind the wheel of a boat on DeRuyter Lake, teaching countless kids how to waterski and giving them "The Challenge" on a tube. He was a big silly goofball, and only wanted to make people laugh. Mike's greatest joy was his children. He adored them with every fiber of his being and was so, so proud of them.

Mike is survived by his wife of 27 years, Alyssa, children Claire (Josh) Popp, Libby, and Nolan Hammerschmidt, mother Diana Hammerschmidt, father and stepmother Robert and Lorene Hammerschmidt, sister Sherri (John) Jensen, mother-in-law Mary Beth Mathey, six nieces, two nephews, his two dogs Ghillie and Yogi, and many friends. He was predeceased by his brother Shon Hammerschmidt and father-in-law Dennis Fleck.

Calling hours will be Sunday, January 15 from 1 to 4pm at Ryan Funeral Home, 44 E. Main Street, Marcellus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated the next morning Monday at 10am in St. Francis Xavier Church, One Main Street, Marcellus. The burial will then follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
