Obituary of Stephen W. Martin
Stephen W. Martin passed away on September 13, 2022 at the age of 73. Steve was raised in Marcellus, graduating from Marcellus High School and Paul Smith's College. He married Nancy Muldoon in 1977 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and was blessed to be with her for 45 years.
In his working life, Steve spent three and a half decades with Onondaga County assisting with a generation long recovery and restoration of Onondaga Lake, and nearly 25 years in both active duty and reserve service as a US Army Warrant Officer. His reward for military service was a number of improbable, enduring and lifelong friendships.
Steve was a resident of "The Valley" for more than 40 years where, together, he and Nancy raised three sons. He was active in many professional, civic and community organizations throughout his life. In retirement, he particularly valued his association with Ralph Share American Legion Post 297, as Commander and Adjutant, his Salt City Barbershop Quartet and the Harmony Katz Barbershop Chorus, and volunteering as a DAV driver for the Syracuse VA Medical Center.
He was an active, long-time communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in The Valley, serving many years on the Parish Council and as a Trustee. His favorite places on earth were the Adirondacks and the St. Lawrence River. Steve enjoyed many interests and activities throughout his life, but nothing more than long leisurely walks while birding with his beloved Nancy.
He is predeceased by his parents William J. Martin and Jean O. Martin; his brother Daniel J. Martin and wife Donna Martin; and brother-in-law Bill Kelly.
Steve is survived by his wife Nancy; three sons Rob (Colleen), Kevin (Maggie) and Jimmy (Julie); six grandchildren Emma, Cole, Isaac, Maeve, Sammy and Claire; stepmother Mary; siblings Kathy Kelly, Jeff Martin, Karen (Bill) Howard, Tom (Janet) Burke, Mike (Nicki) Burke and Jeanne Burke Stein; many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 3 to 6pm Monday, September 19th, with an American Legion Service to follow, both held at Ryan Funeral Home, 44 E. Main Street, Marcellus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated the next morning, Tuesday 9:30am in St. Francis Xavier Church, One West Main Street, Marcellus. The Rite of Committal and burial will then follow at the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Syracuse.
The family would like to thank all of the dedicated staff at the UUH Cancer Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marcellus American Legion, Ralph Share Post 297, P.O. Box 3, Marcellus, NY 13108 or The Upstate Foundation.
