My family moved to Marcellus when I was a sophomore in high school. It was there and then I met my dear friend Edward Ryan. Not academically or athletically oriented, Ed was well liked in high school because of his easy manner and rye wit. He knew how to get through things with limited resources. A skill he often displayed and that always amazed me.
Ed introduce me to many friends from Marcellus. He also introduced me to water skiing on the local lakes, camping in “the pines”, bon fires at the Forest Home Hotel; memories that still make me snicker and smile. Post high school Ed moved to Bend, OR to start a new chapter in his life. I remember how lonely it felt to lose his companionship that summer. We hung out when we were young and strong and time was on our side.
The following summer I visited Ed out in Bend. It was my first cross country trip without family. Ed and some friends picked me up at the airport and we picked up right where we left off, enjoying our young lives. We travelled and camped from Oregon’s coastal dunes to the Cascade forests. Ed was in his element there. He loved the wildness and expanse one finds out west.
Over the last forty-five plus years I have crossed paths with Ed infrequently; A class reunion, a chance encounter at the Home Depot. Nothing that gives proper homage to the bond of friendship we had. When we did see each other Ed always spoke of his family. Please know you were the richness in his life he cherished.
Ed’s passing is a sad event. I know I have been blessed for having known Ed. My sympathy is with all family and friends at this time.
Sincerely,
Mark Edwards
