Obituary of James M. Murphy

James M. Murphy, 95, of Marcellus passed away peacefully in the early dawn of April 15, 2017. Jim was a life resident of Marcellus. He graduated in 1940 from Marcellus Central High School. Jim was a WWII US Army Air Corps Veteran belonging to the 459th Bomb Group, stationed in Cerignola, Italy, and for 64 years was a member of the Marcellus American Legion Ralph Share Post 297. He owned and operated J.M. Murphy Coal & Oil in Marcellus for many years. Jim worked 22 years for the Marcellus US Post Office, retiring in 1984. He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church, Marcellus. Jim, along with his wife Ann, built their home in Marcellus and also the family camp on Otisco Lake. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years Ann Mullen Murphy in 1995, son Michael F. Murphy in 1974, son James M. Murphy in 1983, and daughter-in-law Kathy Garner Murphy in 2015. Surviving Jim are his children John "Jack" (Gail) Murphy of Marcellus, Marjorie Murphy of Stuart, FL, Ann Marie Murphy of Marcellus and Mary (Karl) Schwartz of Onondaga Hill; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7pm, with an American Legion Service to follow, both held Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Ryan Funeral Home, 44 E. Main Street, Marcellus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9am Wednesday, April 26 in St. Francis Xavier Church. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Marcellus. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Marcellus American Legion Ralph Share Post 297, P.O. Box 3, Marcellus, NY 13108.
