Phyllis (Filomena) Setta Obituary
Phyllis (Filomena) L. Setta, Age 98, of Marietta, New York, passed away peacefully at home on March 26, 2026 while holding her daughter's hand. She was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 24, 1928 to Italian immigrant parents, Guiseppe and Pasqualina DiGeorge.
Phyllis was the beloved spouse of John Tyler Setta, Sr., who predeceased her in 1993. She was cherished by her children, John Setta, Jr. (Jennifer) and Margaret Manthey (Brian) and grandsons, Tyler (Jessica) and Shane (Alex). Phyllis was predeceased by her three siblings, John, Mary, and Pat. She leaves behind much-loved nieces and nephews, dear friends, and her church family, all of whom will miss her dearly.
Following her mother's sudden death, Phyllis left school after the 8th Grade to help raise her three younger siblings and manage the household, an early sacrifice that set the foundation for the selfless, hardworking character evident throughout her life. As a teen, she took a clerical job with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company to help support the family. Other early employment included a factory job at Tung-Sol, a prominentAmerican manufacturer of electrical components located in Newark, New Jersey, where she worked for nearly 20 years. During this time, she and her brother John purchased a house in South Orange, New Jersey, and took in their aging Pop.
While with Tung-Sol, Phyllis met her husband, John Setta. They were wed on July 22, 1962 and settled into a brand new house on University Road in East Brunswick, New Jersey. They raised two children, John and Margaret, providing what can only be described as an idyllic childhood. She was a loving, devoted stay-at-home mom while her children were small. Eventually, Phyllis took employment with the East Brunswick Board of Education as a "lunch lady" at Roselle Smith Elementary School, was promoted to Cafeteria Manager, and spent two decades working for the Board of Ed. before retiring.
Eventually, after her husband's passing, Phyllis sold the East Brunswick house and relocated to Marietta, New York, where she purchased a small house down the road from her daughter. Being close by allowed her to play an active role in her grandsons' lives, whom she loved dearly. Phyllis enjoyed some good times in Fort Myers, Florida, where she and her widowed brother John shared a rented condo. Over the years, she made countless happy memories with her grown children, including those from family vacations in Canada.
Phyllis loved to go dancing and to the movies as a youth, where a matinee cost just 11 cents. She reminisced about the Great Depression, life during World War II, and an unchaperoned adventure to California with her cousin. She took delight in life's simple pleasures: dining out, long phone talks with her sister Mary, senior lunches, church social hour, watching her favorite soap opera and TV shows, BINGO, and trips to the boardwalk and casinos. Even leisurely car rides brought her joy. She burned through mystery novels and relished competitive games of Five Crowns, Scrabble, and Wordle.
Phyllis was an excellent cook, renowned for her Italian meatballs, mile-high cheesecake, rice pudding, and saffron risotto. She was highly social, and made new friends effortlessly, whether in store check-out lines or during wrong numbers. Deeply devoted to the Catholic faith, she attended Mass regularly, loved visiting new churches, and kept family and friends covered in fervent prayer. Although small in stature, Phyllis had remarkable inner strength. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of faith, laughter, and love.
Phyllis will be honored during a Funeral Mass on Friday, April 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 1865 Route 80, Otisco, NY. A luncheon follows at the Marietta House restaurant located at 2819 State Route 174, Marietta, NY. Please join us in remembering Phyllis, who touched the hearts of everyone who knew her.
