Obituary of Ellen K. Powers

Ellen Kathleen Powers passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026 at the age of 94, surrounded by loving family at her home in Marietta. Born on November 6, 1931 in Brooklyn, she was the cherished daughter of the late Edward and Margaret (Fasano) Powis. Ellen lived a remarkable life filled with compassion and grace. Ellen started her working life with JP Morgan. A devoted Catholic, she later worked for St. John's University in Staten Island as a secretary, also studying part-time, earning her Associate's, then her Bachelor's Degree and finally her Master's Degree in Counseling. When she retired from St. John's she embarked upon her next career as a High School Counselor at St. John Villa Academy on Staten Island. Always elegant and gracious, Ellen will also be remembered for her gentle demeanor, kindness, wisdom, and determination.

A cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, Ellen was predeceased by her devoted husband of 53 years, John J. Powers, her brothers Roger, Bob, Jack, David and sister Mary. She is survived by her brother Michael; three sisters Katherine, Margaret and Bernadette; her four children John (Olga), Edward, Michael (Carey) and Mary (Bob); nine beloved grandchildren Mary, Julie, Katie, John, Kevin, Colin, Daniel, Dennis and Sarah, as well as three dear great-grandchildren John, Boden and Adelaide. Her family, especially 'the babies', was her greatest joy, and she cherished every moment she spent with them.

A calling hour will be Saturday, January 10, 2026 from 10:00 to 11am, followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11am, both held in All Saints Church, 1340 Lancaster Ave. in Syracuse. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow at St Francis Xavier Cemetery in Marcellus. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to All Saints Church or Hospice of CNY.
